The Golden Egg of Aging™

We call her "The Golden Egg of Aging™" and the "Original Baby Boomer Promoter" because of her tremendous insight years previous to the coming of the Baby Boomer Wave of Aging Younger. A Mother of 3, Grandmother of 10 and a Great-Grandmother of 1 - an unexpected divorce later in life promoted a more positive approach to her future and what was to play in it. She was writing about, and promoting, a Positive Aging Lifestyle before most were even thinking about it.

The Golden Egg of Aging™

Shirley W. Mitchell, National Author, Writer, Syndicated Columnist, Speaker and Celebrity Radio Talk Show Host, coined the Phrase, "Exercise Is The Golden Egg of Aging"... And it certainly shows in this Active, Vibrant Lady who laughs at the word "Retirement" as she intends to keep her goal focused to keep America moving and off the couch - the Flame of the Future is a new mental posture, a new, more Positive Era for Aging. Passion + Persistence + Prevailing = PIZZAZZ... To take our plan on the road across America - to Inspire, Motivate, Excite all the great people in this country and make them aware of the benefits of a Positive Life. To help community based programs working with Aging, Baby Boomers and the Older Generation find alternative methods of positive promotion and successes.

Reflections to The Coming of Age...

"Look at Life with a Spirit of Reflection"... copyright 1996 © 1980-2009 Shirley W. Mitchell ®tm. All rights reserved SMR

In church on New Year's Day 1996, the year the Baby Boom Generation approached the threshold of 50, I looked at the cover of the church bulletin. A vivid picture of ice and snow caught my attention. Sticking up out of the snow, a new bright-colored flower grew straight and tall, stretching toward the sun. The snow could not hinder it The picture shouted to my spirit:
New Life ! New beginning !

The big, bold, colorful words at the top of the picture shot into my soul straight as an arrow:
"Behold, I make all things new." (Revelations 21:5)

In January's spirit of reflection, I enjoyed my own private inventory of my past. My mind also exploded with ideas, dreams, possibilities, and hopes for the future. During my quiet time that New Year's Day, I meditated on the passage from Revelation 21:5. "Then He that sat on the throne said, 'Behold, I make all things new." And He said to me, "Write, for these words are true and faithfil." In this verse God was speaking to the apostle John, the writer of the book of Revelation.

However, being a writer, this Scripture spoke volumes to me for my future. As I make plans and pray through them, I rejoice in this perennial hopefulness. Hopefulness which pushes past frigid barries and shoots for the sun.

When Christ says, "I make all things new," He not only means you and me, He means everything: aging, our understanding of our value in His sight and our purpose in life. As you reflect on your life and make plans for your future may you be filled with enthusiasm.

Enthusiasm: "God within."

Spring Means Remodeling

The excitement of remodeling a house that has become outmoded, inconvenient, and unserviceable, adds zest to life. Our lives could be compared to our homes. As we become older and wiser we realize that certain areas need tearing out and rebuilding. Workmen who remodel our homes start with a strong new foundation for a new wing. Adding a new wing to our lives requires a strong foundation of faith.

Carpenters may tear out walls that have been weaken by termites or age to be replaced by new walls. There are times when the walls of our lives have been eaten by termites of busyness, mediocrity, or complacency and must be replaced by new boards of excellence, enthusiasm, and wise use of precious time. When windows age and get clouded, they are replaced by new ones. Remodeling our lives involves putting new windows in the rooms filled with hate, frustration and selfishness to allow the warm sunlight of God's love beam inside. The roof is a big project when remodeling a house. Throwing away the old shingles of insecurity, fear, and hopelessness, then replacing with new ones, faith, hope, love and peace will make life feel new. When the house is remodeled, we take good pieces of furniture, refurbish, polish and shine each one. We probably add a few new pieces.

As we age we must refurbish, polish, shine old skills and add new ones. God, the master planner, has the power to remodel our aging lives into beauty and charm. "By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures." Proverbs 24:3-4 NIV

"Those that be planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing." Psalms 92:13-14-KJV

Aging And Greatness...

When Al Rocker, THE TODAY SHOW'S weather man on NBC, turned 50, he said, "I have 50 more years before I am eligible to join the Willard Scott 100 year young group." Oh well! We need something to look forward to. We 50 years young people have 40 years before we are eligible to join Willard Scott's 100 years young group.

Dr. Ken Dychwald, author of the book AGE WAVE gave these statistics, "By 2040, the National Institute of Aging projects that 87 million Americans will be over 65. By 2080, there are expected to be 5 million centenarians." Centenarians are teaming with nuggets of golden greatness.

Within every aging person there lies hidden wealth. Like an unmined shaft, personal depths are teaming with nuggets of golden greatness. But, having the potential for extraordinary achievement that results in the fulfilling experience of satisfaction isn't enough. The nuggets must be mined, brought to the surface, taken through the fires of adversity and polished to their peak of brilliance. Aging people who have discovered this untapped gold mine have torn the archaic veil of covering from them and opened the window of light to find a prevailing pattern, too long hidden under a defeatist attitude. Once an aging person has discovered the common thread of potential that runs through winners, that person has the ability to tap into it. When a person does, it can forge a pristine path toward fulfillment, happiness, health and a rewarding state of satisfaction beyond our wildest dreams. It can produce a positive difference in the life of aging America. A mature person who had good health, is confident, a hard worker, and has a positive dream for the future, will enjoy successful aging and a productive life. This person will not fear age, but use the wisdom it gives to live the good life, and gain peace, prosperity and power.

Several years ago, our then First Lady, BARBARA BUSH, entertained with outgoing charm the ladies attending our National American Wholesale Groceries Association as she spoke at the ladies luncheon. I loved her wit, wisdom, and wonderful way with words. She made the position of First Lady seen human and placed humanity in the regal position. This great lady has a way of making everyone she greets feel important. She calls herself "everyone's grandmother." She laughs when telling reporters that she is famous because she picked the right husband. Looking at her, I realize she is merry and maternal. Barbara Bush and her family have certainly made a positive difference in our world. Her #1 cause while in the White House and now in private life is Family Literacy. Her son, President George W. Bush and daughter - in- love First Lady, Laura Bush today are carrying on that family tradition with "NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND," in American education. This sprightly aging woman exemplifies the ageless new old. Her ageless living and endless energy gives her power, style, and zeal. I expect to see her interviewed as one of Willard Scott's 100 years -young - group in a decade.

The social security act, drafted in the 1930's decided retirement age as 65. With the new old the life expectance of a woman today is 84. Dr. Dychtwald believes, "In the not-too-distant future we will likely think of old age as setting in at around 90 , or even, 100.2

Dr. Walter M. Bortz II, one of America's most respected and acclaimed authorities on aging, the former President of the American Geriatrics Society and author of WE LIVE TOO SHORT AND DIE TOO LONG believes, "today's centenarians are simply living the healthy, active, natural life span the human body was designed to achieve: one million hours, or 120 years.

"50 Great Things About Women Over 50"
Why Women Over 50 Love Their Age... by Jeanie Lerche Davis

Reviewed by Brunilda Nazario, MD

Jeanie Lerche Davis recently Interviewed "The Golden Egg of Aging™" - Shirley W. Mitchell, in relation to this Article on "Women Over 50"...

What do other women think is the best thing about turning 50? To find out, we asked WebMD readers, as well as a doctor (Christiane Northrup, MD, author of Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom); a clinical psychologist (Nancy O’Reilly, PsyD); and a retirement lifestyle specialist (Cynthia Barnett, EdD). We also checked out what prominent authors Shirley W. Mitchell (Fabulous After 50™ and Sensational After 60™) and Jane Ganahl (Naked on the Page: The Misadventures of My Unmarried Midlife) had to say about women aging, then sprinkled in a few observations from 60 Minutes' crusty humorist Andy Rooney. Here are Shirley's Tips:

8. You get new hair, new clothes, to match who you want to be. You don't feel old, look old, or act old. -- S. Mitchell
10. A world of opportunities opens up when you turn 50. Today, there are entire web sites, companies, and services devoted to the over-50 demographic. Find your niche in that market. -- S. Mitchell
12. Women over 50 are president, CEO, and the star of their own lives. If you have the attitude that life is precious, that life is grandiose, that you don't want to waste any time, you will make this quality time. -- S. Mitchell
15. You've learned that you can depend on yourself and you are open to new opportunities. You can accept change, tackle life, and move on. -- S. Mitchell
25. You’ve learned to appreciate spontaneous humor, for it gives life a spicy flavor. You laugh a lot, and laugh out loud. You let the child within you play. You don’t have to be “perfect” because no one’s perfect. -- S. Mitchell
47. At 50, you learn the value of being passionate about something -- a lover, a career, your life. Passion is what makes you jump out of bed every morning, makes you love every moment in the day. -- S. Mitchell
49. A woman over 50 knows the value of celebrating life. She's sizzling, not fizzling. She's savvy, not sad. -- S. Mitchell

Jeanie Lerche Davis has been with WebMD since 1999. She researches, reports, and writes daily news stories and health features.

Ms. Davis handled media relations for several museums in Illinois and Virginia before focusing her writing career on health and medicine in 1990. In Houston, she wrote for the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital/Texas Heart Institute. She moved to Atlanta in early 1996 and wrote for the American Cancer Society, Emory University Health Sciences Center, the Atlanta Business Chronicle, and others.

She has received numerous awards, most recently a World Wide Web Health Award for the special report "How to Talk to Your Teen" and a Circle of Excellence Media Award from the American Society for Plastic Surgeons. Ms. Davis is currently a graduate student in the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University.

Late Bloomers...

I noticed along the side of the road one week in September, bright red lilies blooming, renewing the summer-weary landscape. I remembered my grandmother always having bright orange day lilies growing in her yard all summer. The September rains always triggered the dormant bulbs of the late bloomers, Oxblood lilies.

Some gardeners call these beautiful blooms, schoolhouse lilies because; they never fail to bloom about the time the children start to school. You may find these gorgeous blooms in neglected flower beds or at abandoned homesteads, because their deep roots enable the bulbs to withstand poor soil, severe temperatures, and humidity. Each year the brilliant oxblood lilies hold their heads high on the slender foot-tall green stalks to shout I'm alive! The indestmctible spider lily also plums, siren red, at the peak of the storm season, earning its name hurricane lily.

The extended season of the tough nectar-bearing blooms draws beautiful butterflies to your garden. Butterflies tend to favor gardens that produce late blooming lilies that provide nectar for adults and a place to lay eggs. We are thrilled when Monarch butterflies choose our garden for a home.

Planting the oxblood lily bulbs now for next fall along side the hurricane lily in your garden will give you hope, happiness, hefty dose of courage! Looking at the stunning beauty of the Oxblood Lilies, my thoughts raced to the late bloomers that are entering the autumn of life. Fabulous after 50 folks and Fall lilies are both independent types. I'm sure you have people in your circle of life who have taken the experiences of long life and bloomed into bright flowers.

Michelangelo was seventy-one when he painted the Sistine Chapel.

Albert Schweitzer was still performing operations in his African hospital at eighty-nine.

John D. Rockefeller was making $1 million a week when he died at ninety-three.

Golda Meir was seventy-one when she became prime minister of Israel.

Let your roots grow deep into the soil of God's love to produce a late bloomer in your ageless life.

English Version...

Women who claim 50 and 60 years as a stage for the successful female (El Tiempo, Colombia, 2007-03-27)

This is a generation of women who turned the first 50 pages of this calendar-and some are on the 60 - and that do not conform to the stereotype of those who met half a century of life, and for that reason, it is assumed, in the fall twilight of its existence.

These women do not have time for that. They occupied positions of exercising power, exercised in the gym, attending conventions or enjoying a romantic dinner with your partner.

They are women like Hillary Clinton, who at 60 wants to be president of the EU; diva Amparo Grisales who at age 50 was undressed, the French Segolene Royal, who at 51 wants to send in your country; Madonna who is nearing the 'fifth floor ', the president of Chile, Michele Bachelet, and the actress Helen Mirren, owner of Oscar at the age of 61.

Some highlighted by their physical attractiveness, others by their intellect and other more fortunate, for both, but all examples of what is known in the United States as The New Old or the New Aging. One trend based on the generation of Baby Boomers (1946) that identifies nearly 80 million Americans that have led to radical changes in future generations.

"When I came to 50 (in 1996) were still wearing the Baby Boomers and acting as if they were 30," says Shirley W. Mitchell, author of Fabulous after 50 (Fabulous after 50).

"That led to the 'new age' that makes today's women are more active in what were their mothers or grandmothers," he adds.

According to Mitchell eat properly, exercise and have passion for life, in addition to caring for the body, soul and spirit are the cornerstones of the new age. "

The figures say...
A comprehensive study of signature Dove, called 'The beauty comes with the years', revealed that 91 percent of women between 50 and 64 years believe it is time for society to change its perspective on women and the elderly.

"Women over 50 (87 percent of those surveyed) think they are too young to be called old," says the report, conducted by the gerontólogo and winner of the Pulitzer, Robert N. Butler.

According to the report "Women older than 50 years are poorly represented in the media and culture." Despite this, most are proud of their appearance and 86 percent had no problem in revealing her age. Similarly, 92 percent believe that past generations of women over 50 did the things they are able to do today and that makes them different.

In Colombia, as in the world, life expectancy has increased with the advancement of medicine and technology.

According to the National Department of Statistics, Dane, in the mid-twentieth century, life expectancy was 50 years, but the 90 was raised to 70 years. "That motivates changes and progress in the lifestyle of women," said Dr. John G. Cendales.

In Colombia, however, this trend is individual rather than group. "Aging with dignity is something more personal than collective," says anthropologist Jose Ramirez.

Faced with the theme-adds-there is a double dilemma: on the one hand we hear messages that invite them remain vital despite the years, but on the other hand the state has no policy to help achieve it, so the issue becomes responsibility for everyone.

Despite this, between us and these are examples of 'supermujeres' older than 50 who surely will be the gateway for other prolong their youth and vitality beyond what is expected. "We are many that we are active force, aware of everything and that we are very far from what is called the elderly."

The National Institute of Health

Founded in 1950, the National Council on Aging is a charitable organization with a national network of more than 14,000 organizations and leaders. Our members include senior centers, area agencies on aging, adult day service centers, faith-based service organizations, senior housing facilities, employment services, consumer groups, and leaders from academia, business, and labor. Our programs help older people remain healthy and independent, find jobs, increase access to benefits programs, and discover meaningful ways to continue contributing to society.

Founded in 1954, the American Society on Aging is an association of diverse individuals bound by a common goal: to support the commitment and enhance the knowledge and skills of those who seek to improve the quality of life of older adults and their families. The membership of ASA is a multidisciplinary array of professionals who are concerned with the physical, emotional, social, economic and spiritual aspects of aging. They range from practitioners, educators, administrators, policymakers, business people, researchers, students, and more.

The Older Americans Act was originally signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on July 14, 1965. In addition to creating the Administration on Aging, it authorized grants to States for community planning and services programs, as well as for research, demonstration and training projects in the field of aging. Later amendments to the Act added grants to Area Agencies on Aging for local needs identification, planning, and funding of services, including but not limited to nutrition programs in the community as well as for those who are homebound; programs which serve Native American elders; services targeted at low-income minority elders; health promotion and disease prevention activities; in-home services for frail elders, and those services which protect the rights of older persons such as the long term care ombudsman program.

Created in 1965 with the passage of the Older Americans Act (OAA), the Administration on Aging is part of a federal, state, tribal and local partnership called the National Network on Aging. This network, serving about 7 million older persons and their caregivers, consists of 56 State Units on Aging; 655 Area Agencies on Aging; 233 Tribal and Native organizations; two organizations that serve Native Hawaiians; 29,000 service providers; and thousands of volunteers. These organizations provide assistance and services to older individuals and their families in urban, suburban, and rural areas throughout the United States. Our mission is to develop a comprehensive, coordinated and cost-effective system of long-term care that helps elderly individuals to maintain their dignity in their homes and communities. Our mission statement also is to help society prepare for an aging population.

The National Institute on Aging, one of the 27 Institutes and Centers of NIH, leads a broad scientific effort to understand the nature of aging and to extend the healthy, active years of life. In 1974, Congress granted authority to form NIA to provide leadership in aging research, training, health information dissemination, and other programs relevant to aging and older people. Subsequent amendments to this legislation designated the NIA as the primary Federal agency on Alzheimer’s disease research. Our mission is to develop a comprehensive, coordinated and cost-effective system of long-term care that helps elderly individuals to maintain their dignity in their homes and communities. Our mission statement also is to help society prepare for an aging population.

The private, not-for-profit Alliance for Aging Research is the nation's leading citizen advocacy organization for improving the health and independence of Americans as they age. The Alliance was founded in 1986 to promote medical and behavioral research into the aging process. Since then, and as the explosion of the Senior Boom approaches, the Alliance has become the voice for Baby Boomer health by developing, implementing and advocating programs in research, professional and consumer health education and public policy. The Alliance For Aging Research believes that science can help people live longer, more productive lives. Greater access to the latest scientific information will empower people to take control of their own health, while educating them on the importance and need for further medical advances. From policy issues to consumer health programs, the Alliance works to generate knowledge and action on age-related issues. Simply speaking, we strive to advance science and enhance lives through a variety of activities and initiatives.

The non-profit Aging with Dignity was established because you and your family deserve better. We provide you with the practical information, advice and legal tools you need to ensure your wishes and those of your loved ones will be respected. By helping you improve your own quality of care, we can bring about dramatic change, one person at a time. We believe Americans must safeguard the rights of the sick, aging or dying with the same enthusiasm we show for the young or healthy. Since Jim Towey founded Aging with Dignity in 1996, the organization has worked to protect each person's God-given human dignity because we owe it to each other to expect -- and achieve -- nothing less.

The Sand Mountain Lit Chicks

In the Fall Season of 2005, a Small Writing Group of Southern Ladies from the Sand Mountain area in Northern Alabama rekindled friendships, getting together to form a Literary Support Group. Some of them had been meeting for years prior to this get-to-gether. Now it was time for them to share on a more regular routine. So these 5 Southern Authors - Gay Martin, a well-known, well-established Food and Travel Author; Shirley Mitchell, an Author who not only writes about making the most of Life at Any Age, but one who lives out her words; Alice Duckett, formerly from Albertville, now living in Anniston, has written for several newspapers, including The Gadsden Times; Barbara Eubanks, a Christian Humor Author who blends devotions with humor, and Lori Boatfield, a talented essayist and a great future novelist, bring a plethora of ideas and interesting pieces of writing to each meeting. They have found great strength and encouragement for their individual literary endeavors, and development for our talents by listening to and sharing with each other. Rotating the site of their meetings among the homes of the members, we not only look forward to being sounding-boards for each others work-in-progress, but we delight in and look forward to the great refreshments (which now have evolved into full gourmet meals) the hostess provides.
